Charles Noel van Sandwyk wrote, “I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1966. In 1977 I immigrated with my family to Vancouver, Canada.

AFFAIRS OF THE HEART BOOK

AFFAIRS OF THE HEART BOOK

By the early 1980s I was selling my drawings and watercolors in a style reminiscent of the old prints and paintings which hung in my family home.

I studied graphic design at the Capilano College art programme in North Vancouver.

Upon completion in 1986, the wanderlust of younger years sent me travelling to the South Pacific. I discovered the Fiji Islands, and fell in love with a remote island and its inhabitants. I began to divide my time equally between Vancouver and Fiji, leasing land from the neighboring family and building for myself a simple home of grass thatch, in the traditional island style.

I then settled into a pleasurable routine of winter seasons in Fiji filled with painting and writing, the results of which I brought back to Canada each summer and prepared for exhibition and publication each autumn.

My watercolors, etchings and books are now collected across North America and in Europe. The National Library of Canada has maintained archives on my work since 1986. I continue to divide my time between Vancouver and my beloved Fiji.

Mr. Van Sandwyk,

First of all, you are my favorite artist of all time.
Also I was wondering if you’d ever consider visiting Gabriola Island?

Good day Charles!

I am absolutely in love with your work. You have an exceptional talent. What’s more: I was so excited to learn that you originate from South Africa as I too am a South African.

I love to draw and paint and am pottering around with pen and ink and watercolour and was wondering of you could recommend some good quality pens to use for this purpose?

Once again, congratulationson your astounding work!

Kind regards

Trevor

Mr. Van Sandwyk.

Up until now Beatrix Potter was my favorite illustrator…I am now so enamored by your beautiful etchings.
Is there anywhere I can purchase prints of your work? I can’t afford the originals but would love to have some of your work in my home.
They make me happy.
Peace to you.

I have completely fallen in love with your animals…I was at a book fair yesterday and Attic Books had your work on display. Beatrix Potter was my heart until I saw your work. It is amazing. I only wish I was in Victoria and maybe then I could study under you…do you teach at all?…keep up your beautiful art…you make the world smile and when I get out to Vancover to visit my son I will be visiting you if it is at all possible…thank you for making my day.

Own a card collection and several of Charles Van Sandwyck’s books, with my favorite book being the Animal Wisdom Book. I am always keeping my eye of for his new work to see if it is something I would like to add to my collection.
